Hey Rall,
Different vehicles respond to the conversion kits differently. Newer cars like mine have hypersensitive emission controls, mostly O2 sensor & computer software. It runs perfectly well with the conversion kit on the clean burning E85 until the computer realizes that the exhaust is not "dirty" enough according to its programming. It thinks there is a problem & puts the car's software into a "safe" mode. The computer dials back the power because it thinks there is a fault & sets off the Check Engine Light. I've experimented for months with the settings on the converter. The only solution after consultation with the converter retailer is to "blend" gas & ethanol until the computer thinks the exhaust is dirty enough to match its programming. My Blend is slightly lower then true E85. I am very happy with that. Newer cars are so advanced that fooling them 100% is extremely difficult. They really are tuned for gasoline, except the few flex fuel vehicles there are out there. The other mods lean toward extreme, i.e. aftermarket computer, larger injectors for the extra fuel delivery, or higher pressure fuel pump, and major reworking of the o2 system. But all of that is expensive and I have a life. So I am very content with the E75 I have my Blend at now. The conversion has sparked alot of questions from friends & strangers. It's great public relations. -R

Hi Rall,

I talked to Bakemark in Hayward. They sell beet sugar by the ton for about $0.40 per pound. Molasses at $0.11 per pound is looking better. Now if they will only deliver.

Hi Rall,

It's nice to know someone else in the area has similar ideas.

Wesway in Stockton imports molasses - their distributor is offering feed grade molasses for $210/ton. I think that's a little steep but it's the best I've found so far.

The biggest problem I've found with molasses is it has a very high specific gravity. It is so thick that it is hard for the yeast to grow. Adding more water helps the yeast but then the sugar drops to about 15%.
