Hi Robert ... I'm Doug from Ohio
I agree this book does open your eyes. When I first read this book I thought..."I can't do this", so the book went back on the shelf for 3 months.

Since then...I've read through the book so many times, that the book is falling apart. I want to do the aquaponic project that David describes for the micro plant. I have gotten the blue prints for the fish tanks and green house. Picked out the still and now I want to take a 3 month coarse in California for Aquaponics. The course will give me an idea if I can do this.

I think its important us "No. Lets emphasis...US" to start doing and showing others that this can be done.

Friends and family look at me like I'm NUTS when I tell my plans. So I'm looking for like minded people.

Robert, are you one?

Soorry Robert, the unit is only half done, but I was keen to show it to try and get some feedback. The two raised round bits are access ports to which will be fitted pressure and temp gauges. The other is the flue which will be extended to get an appropriate draw. The square tunnel at the bottom is the fuel loading door. These parts are all extended to allow for it all to be boxed in with ply and filled with vermiculite insulation an a lid put on. Existing barrel threads are to be piped for steam outlet to the still, and drainage. The whole unit will then be raised off the ground on a fire board supported with bricks and once again insulated with vermiculite. Iam working on a hopper and auger system which will automatically feed fuel to the combustion chamber to burn shavings, this will require air to be force fed through some holes with a small fan. Both barrels are spaced apart to allow correct flow for the 6" flue. Will post drawings and more pics when complete. What could possibly go wrong?

Hi Robert, just posted pics of new boiler. I intend to box it in and insulate with vermiculite and eventually fit an auger from a shavings hopper with vibrating discharge all linked to a thermostat. Your valued comments please.

Regards Tony

Thanks Robert** * and this is the type of heads-up I was after. Do you have numbers worked out for your membership. I would love to pass on any info I can to ours.

Learning about Permaculture is life changing eh?

Hi Rob,
Interesting comments, the boiler size works well although I have to watch my heat input to avoid excess pressure and steam coming out of my doubler at the bottom. Would love a larger boiler but my objective is to make my weekly fuel requirements as quickly and easily as possible in a small space.
Tax, customs is a tricky one. I was a registered fuel producer and had several visits from customs and excise who eventually de-registered me as most of my bio was for electricity for the factory.Zero rated.
So many people registered in the UK that the department could not cope and law changed. Everyone now has a 2500litre annual tax free allowance for BD, and you don`t need to own you own reactor to claim just "press the button". Brewing is legal and tax free so long as it is not sold, refining or distilling is not, and requires a license but you can`t apply unless you produce huge volumes, outside my scope. The other option is for an experimental license. Hopefully enough people will do it with same results as BD. When I asked the customs guy, his answer was, I don`t want to Know! Many people recover meth with condensers, technically illegal but you can`t sell it as booze. Road fuels in the Uk cost more in tax than you guys pay in total although it`s 20pence a litre less for Bio.

Hi Robert,

I agree there should be a section on building stills. This forum is still young, and as you can see there are not many members. But I think this will change. I hope so anyway.

If we are going to do more than argue (as in debate) politics and ethics here we need to have sections of the web site (or sub-groups) dedicated to the various logical parts of "how to" -- otherwise we won't see this web site as useful as it might become.

Off the cuff these seem like some logical sub-groupings:

Building your still

Where to buy (hyperlinks galore!)
a) Building materials (pall rings, valves, etc)
b) Distillation supplies (enzymes, yeast, etc)

Where people are marketing their co-products. If we can't sell off or use our 'waste' from distillation we're going to drown entire neighborhoods in the leavings! ;)

And maybe...

Theory of operation
a) Ethanol distillation
b) Food source preparation
