Article in recent RURAL SOCIOLOGY issue
There is a great article on the history of alcohol and why we now have gas instead. "A Sociological Look at Biofuels: Ethanol in the Early Decades or the Twentieth Century and Lessons for Today" by Michael S. Carolan (Dept of Sociology, Colorado State University) is a wonderful look at the past. It would be worth tracking down.
